Instructions

Step 1

There are many websites designed to encourage young readers. The favorite in my house is bookadventure.com (link at bottom of page) Kids and parents register and children read books and take short quizzes to earn points redeemable for rewards.

Step 2

Here is a picture from our wall
Create a book worm for your little readers. Let them know that book worms are very hungry and when you read a book, it’s like feeding the book worm.
Step 1: Using construction paper cut out one large circle and draw a cute face for your worm.
Step 2: Cut out extra circles to add to the body when you’ve read a book.
Step 3: Write the title of the book and the author on circle and let your children watch their new pet grow!

Step 3

Take your kids to the children section of the library. Let them know that they can pick any books that they would like. You can give them a certain number of books – 10, 15 or whatever you would like your limit to be. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, if your child is interested, go with it! Imagine that this is very much like a shopping spree to your child and what a great way to get them thinking positively about reading!

Tips & Warnings

For the book worm, when writing the title and author on each circle, let your child point out the title and author to you. Older children can read or write it on the worm themselves.
