Cultivating online credibility requires currying favor with Google, which is best done by link-building. So let’s think: If your business and website were top of mind and authoritative, where would you expect to be listed or referenced on the Internet? Are your competitors referenced there already?

The most powerful and credible links on the Internet are placed by individuals who have influence over your online target audience. Often, these are bloggers, editors, industry experts – those with numerous social media followers. Wouldn’t it be good to have an industry influencer who likes you and promotes your stuff by mentioning your business to his or her vast audience? In many cases, that’s the magic touch a business needs to step up to the next level.

Social media sites can be a great source for identifying these key individuals. They act as a virtual trade show, streamlining your ability to “meet” and build a relationship, and win them over to actually promote your ideas to their audience(s). If you’re in the sports industry, it’s kind of like having Michael Phelps or Tiger Woods (ahem) say good things about you. When this happens, you will have many new relationships, followers and links to your site.

Here are some of the keys to building relationships with influencers online.

Know what the influencer likes or wants before you introduce yourself. The fastest way to get ignored by the influencer is to try to sell them your idea before they even know who you are. (Think spam filters). Instead, get involved in the group and listen to what’s being said. If it’s appropriate, provide interesting, thought-provoking comments or responses. Some influencers aren’t a bit shy and will tell you flat-out what they are looking for. If you possess what the influencer is looking for, it’s time to make your introduction.

Introduce yourself by letting them know that you have something they might want and then give some details in a respectful way. Remember: you want to pique their interest, not bury them in details. If they’re interested, you’ll know it soon enough.

Wait for their response. If they don’t respond in a reasonable timeframe, find another way to introduce yourself: phone calls often work, but it’s best to speak face-to-face.

At this point, it’s assumed that you really do have what they want and that the influencer will act on it immediately. Otherwise, it’s back to step one again; in some cases, it’s over for your shot with that influencer.

In my industry of SEO professionals, getting in front of an influencer can be very tough, but I’ve done it several times by writing articles that deal with issues few others write about. In particular, I try to write articles that editors of well-known blogs will want to publish.

I recently contacted the editor of a popular blog because I learned that he was interested in good SEO articles. I provided a sample of my writing; he liked it and gave me access to his blog to post my next article.

A few weeks later when I posted my article in the drafts section, the editor liked it so much he asked if he could publish it in another blog he edited that was much more popular than the one I had already been approved for.

One thing that helped to get my article accepted involved closely reading and following all of the guidelines for guest blog posting. Don’t make an editor postpone your article because it didn’t meet one of the guidelines. I also used a professional copywriter to tweak the article after it was written. A professional can give your article that extra polish it needs to stand out – and get you noticed.

Within a few days of my article going live, my post was tweeted 15 times – by the editor as well as several other industry influencers – and I got some encouraging feedback in the comments section.

What about links? Not only did this blog post link to my site, but the post itself is linked from a few places, adding even more power to the links in the post.

For those of you who like to keep track, that initial successful relationship with an industry influencing blog editor yielded:

My name and business on 2 blogs aimed at my target audience

15 tweets, and re-tweets from additional industry influencers

Several high-quality links to my website

Instant credibility within my industry (now I can boast a bit, “see my article on this respected industry blog”)

A new relationship with an industry influencer (to get more quality links to my site)

A foundation for building more relationships with influencers in my industry

Sure, it takes some work to figure out who’s who in your field, then to spend time with them socially, learning what they like (and want). But it can pay large dividends for your credibility and business.

A new year always brings New Year’s resolutions, as well as the urge to purge things from your life and business and begin anew. I caught the decluttering bug between Christmas and New Year’s Day this year and removed from my office many boxes of physical materials that had served me well once upon a time but I had now “outgrown.”

The physical act of removing clutter from my workspace left me free to focus on what remained. Much of what’s left is not physical, however. Like me, many online business owners have more electronic items in their business than physical ones. This is the point where many independent service professionals get stuck — trying to organize and take inventory of all those electronic assets and determine how to best utilize them in the coming year.

How can you track these electronic pieces of your business? By taking an inventory. You can take this inventory on paper, on a white board, on your computer, or wherever works for you.

Here are 17 points to include in your online business inventory:

Target Market. Describe the market(s) you serve and how you serve it/them. This will help you streamline other assets you find in your business to help you evaluate whether certain projects are right for your business.

Domains and hosting. Track down all the domains you own and where they are registered and where they are hosted. Note which domains are attached to web sites or are in use some way (even those that are forwarded to other sites). Which ones are not being used at all? What fees are you paying annually to renew these domains and hosting accounts?

Web sites. List all the web sites that you are currently using, including where they are hosted, the username and password to access the hosting control panel, FTP information, and emails associated with the site. Note how much traffic each web site has received over the past few months and estimate how much revenue the site is producing. Then, make a second list of all the web sites you own that are currently under development or are currently working on.

Blogs. List all the blogs you use, separating those that are inactive from the ones that are active. Note where they are hosted or the service hosting them, the username and password to access the hosting control panel, and login information. Note how much traffic each blog has received over the past few months, the number of subscribers you have to the blog, and estimate how much revenue the blog is producing, if you can.

Email marketing. List every mailing list, including your newsletters, autoresponders, customer lists, affiliate lists, prospect lists, etc. Note the purpose of the list, number of subscribers for each, and estimate how much revenue that list is producing.

Products. If you sell information products, make a note of both those that have been completed and are for sale and those in development. Also note any products that you give away for bonuses or give away on your site. If you sell physical products for which you keep an inventory, write them all down. Record how many you’ve sold of each product in the past year.

Paid Memberships. Inventory all the paid memberships you have in paid forums, PLR sites, professional associations, membership sites, and other memberships you pay for that are directly related to your business, along with their URLs, usernames and passwords. Take note of how much you pay for this membership and how often and how you use it.

Free Memberships. Note all the free memberships you have in various groups, forums, social networks, etc. Outline why these memberships are valuable to you and how much time you spend on each of them on a daily/weekly basis.

Software. Record all the software you have on your computer that is related to your business, including license/registration info, purchase price, and date purchased. Make a note of how frequently you use this software.

Outsourcing Team. Write down who works with you, what they do, how much you pay them per hour or per job, and their average monthly payment.

Affiliate links. Regularly recommending products and services for which you are an affiliate is a great way to add another stream of income in your business. Make a list of the products and services for which you are an affiliate, including your affiliate URL, affiliate account URL and username and password, and how much you have made in sales from each affiliate relationship.

Master password list. Incorporate all the passwords you have collected thus far into a master list, along with others you use regularly.

Speaking topics. Note the title, description, learning points, and interview questions of talks that you give regularly both face-to-face or virtually as a presentation or an interview.

Articles. Note the titles of all of the articles you have authored, along with a summary description of each. If you use an article distribution service, you may find your article index there. Move all of your articles under one folder on your computer so that you can easily access them in the future.

Recordings. Note the titles of all of the audio and video recordings you have made, including those where you were someone else’s guest, along with a summary description of each. Write down how the recordings are being used — for sale as an info product, as a bonus for one of your products or someone else’s product, or as a free giveaway.

Services. Note the nature of all services you currently provide, and those you plan to offer in the coming year, as well as your current pricing plans, future pricing plans, and how much money you made from each service in the past year.

Clean it up. Now it’s time for serious evaluation and to make some difficult choices. Remember, these will be some of the most important business decisions you’ll make to help you refocus for a highly productive and profitable business. There are just two rules to follow here: — If it doesn’t fit in with your chosen target market and business plan – GET RID OF IT! — If you still decide to hang on to it anyway, but it weighs on you in any way – GET RID OF IT!

This business inventory and cleanup may take a week or more, but once it’s completed, you’ll have a visual accounting of all of your business assets, which will help you plan for a profitable year in your business.

The social media movement has expanded the number of people we can reach and connect with on a personal level. The new relationships and connections we create with people all over the world can have a profound effect on our personal and business growth. We learn about cultures and nations that we were, perhaps, previously ignorant of. None of this is a new concept, but what may be is how quickly you can destroy your business by using social media incorrectly.

Transparency is a Utopian Concept

Not too long ago, Michael Fortin wrote an article titled “Don’t Be Transparent, Be Authentic Instead”. That article is an important read for any social media wrangling business blogger and you can search for it online.

That article is the tip of the iceberg in the concept of ‘transparency’ being too Utopian to work within the jaded confines of our society. Of course, true transparency is ideal. Many things about a perfect world are. Unfortunately, as a group, most of the world isn’t ready or willing to accept true transparency without penalty.

When Transparency Fails

Let me give you a couple of examples of transparency failure we’ve seen.

Failure 1: We had a copywriter who was posting on Twitter about the work he was doing. He made several posts within a few hours which were ugly complaints about a client and how ’stupid’ he felt that client was. We obviously considered this unacceptable and immediately removed him from our list of subcontractors, but think about this: If he was hoping to use Twitter to get more client work – how many potential clients just read that and thought… “I’m not going to risk being badmouthed on here, I’ll find someone else.” Everyone gets frustrated, but what if the client he was working on read that? Put it this way, if you wouldn’t say it to your client directly – don’t post it either.

Failure 2: We had a designer who was a day late returning her design phase work. When we contacted her, she said she had a family emergency the night before and was unable to send in her work because she wasn’t home. A quick check on Facebook showed that she was actually out at a party that night and posted multiple times while drunk talking about how much she was drinking and even hinting at wanting to bring a man she met there home with her. Obviously, we relieved her of the design work, handed it to another designer who caught up on the time schedule, and never again worked with her. In this case, people are allowed to have a life, we understand that. But if you cannot get your work done and have to lie about why – it’s a problem. If you do not have enough class to not post details about your ‘wild nights’ to everyone on your social networks — that’s also a problem.

How We Monitor Social Media Conversations

My business has been around for over a decade and is very focused on client satisfaction and excellent treatment of our web design clients. We have a network of hundreds of copywriters, designers, and coders who work with us on projects. However, even with screening of those experts when they come on board with us – you don’t always know someone until you have observed them over a long period of time.

That’s why we monitor what they say online.

How do we do that? Well first we get as many of their social profiles as we can. Usually, we ask for a list of them. We’ve also found that most people won’t provide them all. We then Google search the usernames of the ones they have given us because most people use the same usernames over and over. We also monitor blogs, and check for listings of social networks on those.

We have a system set up to consolidate all their social media comments into one master feed. That master feed can then be browsed directly to see what they’re up to, but that’s a lot of things to read each day. What we do is take the master feed, run it through a filter that creates two sub-feeds based on certain things we think are important to monitor. The first sub-feed is created by running the master list through a keyword & synonym filter that pulls out words related to business – for instance, “client” “business” “work” etc… The second sub-feed has a filter that runs their posts through a check for foul language and words like “sex” “drugs” “drunk” etc… There are hundreds of words in each filter.

Seem a bit ‘big brother’? It probably is – but reputation and client treatment is very important to us.

Here’s the thing: If we can read it and you can lose work with us over it… how many POTENTIAL clients did you lose also?

7 Ways to Edit Yourself

We’re not suggesting you stop having a life and stop making mistakes. You can post about those things and it simply makes you a more interesting person to read about. Just use common sense:

If you wouldn’t say it to a client or boss – don’t say it where they can read it either.

If you wouldn’t say it to your grandmother – don’t say it on your public posts.

If you wouldn’t say it to a police officer – don’t post it on your social networks. For that matter, don’t do it either.

If you plan to lie to your boss – don’t put the truth where they can see it.

If you plan to go out and get drunk and know you have a tendency to post while drunk – give your phone to a friend to keep for you.

Learn how to use privacy settings and understand how visible your posts are on different social networks.

If you want a place to vent – create a completely different identity for yourself to do that. Name no names in your posts, and make no connection to your other profiles or email addresses.

Consider it all part of Internet Etiquette. Social networks are great to hear more personal things about someone and we encourage people to share a bit of themselves online (using normal cautions etc..). In the long run, full transparency is too Utopian for our modern world to handle well. We’re still at a point in our societal growth that when someone seriously calls a client an idiot – they tend to get a bit upset about it.

Much of the general public believes that, because many people download movies, music, and software, nothing online has any value. However, this is far from accurate — people just have different criteria for making their purchases online. In a world that seems to believe everything should be free on the Internet, how can subscription web sites hope to survive?

In answering this question, I’ll provide 5 tips that will keep your subscription web site profitable. Whether you run an online magazine, a money-making web site, a private community with memberships, or just a web site with unique, in-demand content, you can earn money selling subscriptions to your web site.

1. Don’t be a salesman, be an expert.

We’ve all visited those web sites where, every few lines, we’re reminded that we must pay for access to the site. Phrases like “Sign up Today!”, “Only $9.99 per month!”, and “Purchase a subscription!” are thrown around the web page as the webmaster’s hope of making a sale is made devastatingly clear to the visitor.

In doing this, the webmaster changes the perceived mission or focus of the web site from the subject of the content (such as cars or business) to him/her making money. If you want to sell content online, you’re going to need to show that you have a solid grasp on your content’s subject matter, and confidence in your web site. It’s more effective to create good content and present it in a clean, clear web site than to confuse visitors by bombarding them with subscription links. In this way, you’ll be seen as an expert and not someone who’s just trying to make a quick buck.

2. Find a niche market.

This has been an obvious key to success for many businesses over the years, but it’s so important that I feel it should be repeated here. A niche subject for your web site is one with a relatively small scope. For example, instead of creating a web site that explains “how to make money”, you might create a web site that focuses on the topic of “how to make money with open source software.”

This narrows the scope of your site, increases search engine traffic, and gives you a chance to gain a much bigger percentage of the total market sales. If you write on too vague or too broad a topic, people won’t be confident that you will continue to write about things that interest them. Don’t cast a big net in the hope that you will catch a few fish; show that you understand the exact needs of your target market.

3. Show them that your content is worth buying.

Every day, I see sites that are trying to sell a product — usually ebooks on how to make money fast (or some other extremely broad topic). The site consists of one page filled with reason after reason why the visitor should buy the product, presented in multi-colored fonts with bullet lists galore. Yet I rarely see a single example or excerpt from the product that I am being sold so fiercely. With all of the competition on the Web, it’s just not realistic to expect to reason someone into buying your product.

You must give some of your content away for free. Using any one of today’s subscription content management systems, it’s easy to make some content available to members only, while leaving other content open to the public. This allows your visitors to explore your web site as if they were members, while gently being reminded at certain points of the benefits of membership. If you give away some content for free, your content can sell itself.

4. Search engines are your friends, so be nice to them.

An added benefit of the business model described in point #3 is that search engines will love your web site. This is important: if your web site can rank high in the search results for your site’s keywords, you’ll receive loads of highly targeted, free traffic. Google and other major search engines have technology built into their page ranking system that can sniff out “empty” web sites, or web sites that only attempt to sell content, yet provide none themselves.

You can gain a higher rank in the search engine results by making some content freely available, and using a clearly formatted web site. By making some content freely available, you give Google the chance to find your site’s keywords while increasing the likelihood that other web sites will link to you (something Google loves). Also, a clearly formatted web site is quickly understood by search engine spiders, which can “read” your content properly.

There are certain techniques that you can use to increase your search engine rankings, and these form the basis of the area of search engine optimization (or SEO). However, instead of worrying too much about this stuff, I’d recommend you build your web site using a content management system that uses SEO-friendly defaults. These defaults, combined with your quality content, will result in a web site that’s naturally search engine friendly.

5. Presentation is key.

It is true that a web site’s content will sell subscriptions all by itself, but we can’t ignore the fact that a well-designed, user-friendly web site will sell more subscriptions that an ugly web site with the same content. This fact seems to have been forgotten, especially in the subscription web site market. I’m not saying that a web design needs to be flashy or filled with images, but if you expect to sell subscription memberships to your web site, you’re going to need to present a professional image.

To me, a professional web site means: a nice logo, clear navigation, and a simple layout with proper content flow. A good subscription content management system should include a default web site design that offers these features. This means that, to get started, all you have to do is add content, change the logo, and change the colour scheme.

You Can Make Money with Subscription-based Content

Many people felt that the open source movement in software would kill the software industry, but as we’ve seen, the software industry has adapted to the open source movement and created the “software as a service” model. In doing so, the software industry, especially online, is bigger than ever.

Now, in the paid content arena, people are again saying that it’s impossible to sell content in a world where everything is free. Yes, it’s true that some subscription web sites haven’t transitioned well into the era of free content.

However, if you understand your site’s visitors and stay in touch with the free content model as these five tips suggest, you could earn thousands of dollars per month with nothing more than a computer and some passion.

I am constantly amazed by the number of people I meet on the web who have absolutely no marketing strategy whatsoever behind their site or online marketing.

I am even more amazed by the number of people who believe all they have to do is buy a domain, slap a few HTML pages together and place them on a web host somewhere. Then they expect everything else to just happen because their site or business is on the web!

It very rarely happens that way.

Creating an online business takes some planning and strategy if you want your site or business to succeed. You must have a plan of action, but most of all, you must have some fundamental marketing strategies behind your online site.

Now, I am speaking from experience here, because I also stumbled around on the web for 2 or 3 years like the people I described above. I foolishly thought just because I had a web site, I could do business on the web.

Well, not very much happened. I received very little traffic and very few sales. My site was going nowhere fast.

Fortunately, the theme I chose for my first site was Internet Marketing! I spent those first years studying all the online marketing material and information I could get my hands on. I gradually learned what to do and what not to do when it came to marketing online.

Mostly, I stumbled across some great Internet marketers like Marlon Sanders, Neil Shearing, Ken Evoy… true pioneers of online marketing. By studying those first class marketers and their marketing techniques I learned how it was all done.

Over time, I learned how to become very analytical with my sites and marketing. I started to create marketing strategies and put them into practice with my sites. This was all new to me because I have a background in education rather than marketing.

Now, I would like to share with you some of these marketing strategies and practices – just things I do and things I put into place which enable me to receive a modest but very comfortable online income.

So here are some things you can try:

1. Know Your Market Or Audience

First and foremost, you must know your market. Know who you will be targeting with your marketing? Know who will be buying your products or the affiliate products that you’re promoting on the web?

I keep my eyes open for hot trends or products which everyone is buying. You can use programs like Google Trends to see which products are becoming hot. For example, in electronics, which products are on everyone’s wish list? Is it laptops, PCs or netbooks? Are people buying smart phones, PDAs, Blu-ray Players or E-readers?

Just find out what products are hot? Find what products are being searched for in the search engines… do a check to see how many searches are made each month for your chosen product? Use WordTracker, or a free online site such as Seobook.com to see what products people are searching for on the web.

If there is a large demand/audience/market for your product or subject area, then you have a better chance of succeeding online. It is a simple marketing strategy that many first time marketers ignore – please don’t. So choose your products to match the demand that is out there for them.

2. Buying Mindset

One of the key elements to selling stuff online is finding people at the exact moment they are ready to buy. What some marketers refer to as a “Buying Mindset”. You find people who have their minds set on buying something when they reach your site.

This is much easier than you think!

A simple way I found to do this is to create sites which target keywords related to buying… such as gifts, coupons, bargains, deals and so on. For example, a site on wedding gifts will obviously attract customers who are interested in buying wedding gifts.

To give you a concrete example from my own site, I have a section on “Corporate Business Gifts” which offers special deals/coupons on corporate business gifts… someone searching for that phrase is more likely to purchase a gift. Just simple reasoning, but it works wonders for selling stuff online.

In the Info-Product market, many Gurus create a “Buying Mindset” by offering special bonuses and discounts if someone buys from their links. Another simple way to boost your sales.

3. Target Special Holidays

Along the same lines, I like targeting times when people feel obligated to buy. Using special holidays like Christmas, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day… in your marketing can be very effective.

There are occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, graduations… when people feel they must buy something for a loved one or special friend. Targeting those occasions with your marketing can be extremely effective… people are looking for a birthday gift, a graduation gift or a wedding gift – you simply help them find what they’re looking for.

On one of my sites, I target the “Back To School” market which has proven very lucrative since I market high-ticket affiliate items such as laptops, PCs and netbooks.

4. Place All Your Emphasis On Supplying Information

The majority of people searching on the web are looking for information – first and foremost – even those who are ready to buy. They want information on the subject or product they’re searching for on the web. It should be your marketing strategy to give them this information.

All of my sites are based on supplying information to my visitors.

If you give solid information they will be pleased and take note of your site and a few will buy the products you recommend, but the information must come first.

Even popular selling sites like Amazon give loads of consumer information and feedback while selling their products on the web. Consumers want information on the products they’re buying. Supply this information and you will sell more products.

5. Target Long Tail Keyword Phrases In Your SEO

If you’re selling stuff on the web, it is extremely important that you have a SEO marketing strategy. You must use the search engines to bring in those quality visitors and potential customers to your site. You must rank high in the search engines for your chosen keywords.

I have found SEO is not easy but it is also not that hard to do. In order to rank high you must be persistent, have a six month or yearly plan… work at it over time, even years to build up your rankings. Most webmasters won’t have the patience or resources to stick to a long-term strategy for months, even years before they start ranking for popular, well-searched for keywords.

However, there’s another quicker and faster way to get quality traffic from the search engines. Instead of targeting highly competitive popular keywords, you target longer keyword phrases that have little competition. For example, someone searching for a particular brand and model is more likely to buy then someone searching for a general topic. Someone searching for “cars” compared to someone searching for “2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT” – the last phrase will have very few searches but it can produce more targeted buyers.

6. Build Lists of Interested Buyers

One of my most effective marketing strategies is building simple lists of people who want to receive further information on the subject or product they’re considering buying. The web is a very temporary process since most people spend less than a few seconds on most sites. So it is important that you try and get them to opt-in to your mailing list, join your Twitter account or FaceBook group… and so on.

You must build lists of people who are interested in finding out more about your subject or product. This way you will have repeat visitors to your site and you will get the opportunity to sell to them again and again. If you build a trusting relationship with these contacts, they will respect your opinions and suggestions.

List building can have a very positive effect on your sales numbers so it is one marketing strategy you should definitely try if you’re not already using lists.

7. Sell Things You Can ONLY Buy Online

This marketing strategy is so simple – it’s almost laughable. But I quickly found selling stuff that can only be bought online do much better than selling stuff that can be bought at your local Walmart. If buyers can only find it online, then you will have a much better chance of selling it to them.

Therefore, marketing unique products or specialty items, which are only available online can prove very lucrative. This is a very simple marketing strategy but also a very effective one. Just try it.

There are no doubt, countless other marketing strategies you can use. But using some or all of the ones listed above will help increase your online sales. Again, just try them and see for yourself.

If you are want to expand your product development skills, then here are my top seven tips that are quick and easy to implement. This will give you a ‘to do’ list that will help you quickly expand your business.

Whatever your topic, niche or passion sometimes learning from other market places can give you inspirational ideas. In fact if you will just walk around with your head up and your eyes wide open then you will see that opportunities are presenting themselves to you all the time.

These ideas will help stimulate some ideas for you:

1 . Visit a local exhibition

Go to an organised show of any kind and take your camera. Shoot photos of exhibits that are attracting a crowd, and of the signs, booths and all types of exhibitors. Collect any handouts, marketing documents, price lists, future exhibition schedules, and anything else that pertains to working or exhibiting at trade shows.

Take a notebook and make general notes on your observations. Using the photos and material collected, begin a reference file of how to participate and create effective exhibits at trade shows.

2. Go to your local car boot sale

Take your camera and wander round to find the niches that the various dealers have carved out for themselves. Look at what people are buying and take pictures of interesting exhibits. Speak to the sellers and get an insight into how passionate they are for their market.

Make a note of items that catch your eye: note how much they are being sold for, condition and any other key pieces of information. Then go back and search the items on eBay and see if they are being sold there and what for.

3. Take a walk around your local large Maplins or PC World

Find the largest high tech retail store in your area, and spend a few hours there. Look closely at computer accessories, video cameras, and computer networking technology.

All of these technologies have a learning curve and they are things that you can develop “How To ” products around.

4. Attend a Free Workshop

Find a one day training workshop on any subject that interests you. Attend and pay attention to how the workshop is organized.

Take photos of the stage, the registration desk, any signs, serving tables, product displays and collect copies of all the hand-outs and marketing materials used to promote and manage the event.

Keep a dossier of all that you collect, you may need this material at a later date as reference when you eventually produce your own training workshops.

5. Go to your local Borders or WH Smith

Any place with an extensive magazine collection is ideal, and spend some time looking at the number of magazines that cover specific niches. Look for trends of increasing or decreasing magazine covering specific topics.

Find and buy magazines on subjects you know nothing about, but seem interesting to you. Read the magazines you buy, especially the letters to the editor and the ads. Look for opportunities to solve problems. Look for interesting technologies and topics that might be your future niche.

6. Take lots of photographs

Go to your nearest big tourist destination and again take your camera. Pick up all the free brochures, flyers, maps, free newspapers, and other marketing material you can find for businesses and activities in the area.

File these for later use as reference material for product ideas and take photos of interesting businesses, signs, promotions, exhibits.

7. Make A Video

Start with a topic that interests you and make a mini documentary about it. Have an objective for the documentary, then structure it so it has a beginning, middle and end. Shoot some video footage, import it, edit it, add titles and background music, and burn the results to a menu driven DVD.

Learn what tools you need to get the job completed, and get it done. Learning to produce interesting videos is a strong path to profitable product development.

Summary:

Carrying out these tasks will give you a good grasp on where you can source inspiration for new products. Plus, you’ll have conducted some market research, discovered that there are people all over the planet who are interested in buying and learning a whole bunch of stuff .

But more importantly, you’ll have built a great resource of images, documents and material to help you get started.

Further, you’ll have also practiced your skills in product development by making a short movie.

Now all you need to do is chose a topic that is interesting to you, and has market potential, that can hold your interest for at least 12 months!

Twitter will be releasing a new feature called “Contributors,” which allows multiple users to contribute to a single company Twitter account. (Woohoo!)

Here are five business benefits to this fancy new feature:

Now there’s no question between choosing a personal and company account. You should have both! You will even *need* both to take advantage of this new feature.

The feature encourages multiple people to contribute to a company Twitter account. Twitter should never become a “burden” to a single person. By allowing multiple minds post interesting Tweets, most likely your content will more interesting to your network overall.

It will now be more transparent who is Tweeting what, keeping employees accountable. There have been many debates how to “manage” employees’ social media activity. Now, company account tweeters are more responsible for what they’re saying on behalf of the company; their name is there too!

This is a fantastic opportunity to build your company brand through the individual personalities of a company. It’s hard to engage with a faceless company logo, but easy to chat with its employees! The personality of your company will shine through the personality of your individual Tweeters.

This feature will be compatible with applications like Cotweet! Twitter is making it easy to integrate with the tools we’re already using.

Are you ever stumped on what to write about?

When you’re doing article marketing to drive traffic to your website, you need to be submitting articles consistently month in and month out. That means that you need to have a steady stream of article ideas, and that can be a challenge sometimes!

I’ve got some good news for you though: You have more article ideas than you realize. Most likely, you have several article ideas right under your nose on your own website or in your business.

Here are some tips for finding hidden article ideas:

Look on your own website. You probably have content that would be perfect for one or more articles. For example, if you are a business coach, you might have a page on your website called “Why use a business coach?”. That sort of topic can be turned into an article.

Your old newsletters. What messages have you been sending your list? If you have a list you’ve probably been in steady communication with your subscribers. You send them helpful tips, observations, anything that will provide value to them. If you have any teaching topics from old newsletters you’ve sent, you can use them as an article. You may have to rework things a little to meet word count requirements and make the newsletter content article worthy, but you’ve got a great head start on the writing process.

Written any e-books? An e-book is a great source of article ideas because you already have the content broken into chapters. When using content from an e-book, you can extract whatever material you would like to use, and then add an intro and concluding paragraph to form an article.

Your blog. If you have a well-tended blog, you have a continuous source of article ideas at your fingertips. Look for posts that teach: how to’s or list posts are readily adapted to be articles.

Audio interviews that you’ve done. Listen to old interviews you’ve done and write down the questions you were asked and a synopsis of your answers. You may be able to get several articles out of one interview.

Your replies to questions from your customers. Sometimes you’ll get a great question on a general topic from a customer that necessitates a more involved reply. As long as you’ve taken the time to explain things, why not use your reply as the foundation of an article that answers the same question?

Here’s what to do when you’ve found hidden content that you can morph into articles:

Rework the content if it is appearing on your own site. It is beneficial that the content on your own website be original, so you wouldn’t want to submit anything verbatim from your website. This is not necessary if the original content was in a newsletter, audio interview, or a customer support answer. Only content from your own website needs to be reworked to be unique.

Remove all promotional references from the content–that may be appropriate on your own website or in a newsletter, but trying to make a sales pitch in an article is not appropriate. Save that for the resource box.

The website content should be used as a general guide for your article. Don’t try to reword the content line by line–it’s too easy to copy the original content. Instead, look at your original work as an outline for your article and write the article fresh.

Write for newbies and for more advanced audiences. You can cover the same topic writing on different levels.

Did you find any article ideas that were hiding right under your nose? It’s a great feeling when you do. Remember, when you feel like “there’s nothing to right about”, look at your website and your business from a fresh perspective, and you’ll be surprised at the article ideas you find.
